5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this lens. Or not., May 15, 2010

ANOTHER REBATE ALERT, December 6, 2011: Canon is again running an "instant rebate" (the rebate should be in the price you see--you don't have to mail in some coupon) for this lens. This time it's over the period November 27, 2011 through January 7, 2012. If this is the right lens for you (see below for my comments and other reviews), then this is probably a good time to consider purchasing this lens. I continue to regard it as one of my most versatile lenses. Best wishes.

UPDATE, July 11, 2010: The Canon rebate referred to below should just about be concluding as I write this, so you can read this review (and others) and decide whether this lens--at its regular price--is right for you. (Or you can wait for the next rebate program, but that may be a while from now.) Since the time when I wrote my initial review, I have come to regard this lens even more highly. It feels great on my Canon EOS Rebel T2i, and I had a recent experience with this lens that might interest... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Walkaround Lens for APS-C Bodies, February 7, 2010

This review is from: Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM UD Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (Camera)
This lens will take a key place in the Canon line-up: it will be the first high quality wide angle to medium telephoto lens for APS-C (i.e. 1.6x) crop bodies. Thankfully, this lens is well qualified for this role. The build quality is solid and both the focus ring and zoom rings are firm yet move smoothly. The image quality provided by the lens is outstanding. The lens is very sharp across its zoom range, even wide open. Color fidelity is also a strong point of the lens, as it produces saturated yet natural colors. Distortions are also at a minimum considering the focal range of the lens. Although there is some barrel distortion at the wide end (particularly at 15mm), this is simply unavoidable for superzooms covering this range and it should be pointed out that even L lenses covering the same (35 mm equivalent) range cannot fare better in this respect. I confidently give this lens 5 stars!

The only alternative to this lens that I considered was the Canon EF-s 17-55mm... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Walk-around for APS-C dSLRs, December 8, 2009
This review is from: Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM UD Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (Camera)
I was one of the early fans of this lens, and to my knowledge, one of the first guys to get their hands on one and play with it, from the moment I held this lens, I knew she was a winner

Lets start with the build quality, its fantastic, ok its not quite L-level, but it is considerably better than the old 17-55 f/2.8 IS I owned, as in its put together much better, the build is similar to a midrange Nikon lens [Such as the 16-85 VR] which is a good thing, the zoom and focus rings both operate smoothly, but are also reassuringly firm, there is a slight bit of zoom creep between 24-35 I've found, but nothing major to worry about

AF-wise, its a very quick performer, probubly one of the faster USM lenses out there, and its also very quiet, even for a USM lens the soft noise is well..softer...and the IS functions completely silently and smoothly, and as advertised, its good for at least 4 stops of stabilization, I've managed 1/4 shots with ease at 85mm for... 5.0 out of 5 stars Great when Used Correctly., August 3, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Digital Concepts 1 2 4 10 Close-Up Macro Filter Set with Pouch (58mm) (Electronics)
I see that in the negative ratings here the people simply misunderstood what these are for. They are to move your camera in CLOSER to the subject and simulate a macro lens. What they do is essentially act as a magnifying glass. And like one, you need to move it in and out till you find the appropriate distance for it to work properly. This is not a tele-converter.

I find they work quite well. I have had macro lenses in which the subject takes up the sensor, a 1:1 ratio. These however allow for the subject to assault the sensor. Instead of life size these make for race of super giant monster sized. Ultra macro can be achieved with the small expenditure of fifteen bucks.

I find there is no outstanding vignetting or aberrations. At the highest magnifications there is an extremely shallow depth of field, so be sure you are prepared to work with that if you plan on working in those types of magnification.

Overall a great product, and with macro... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value, August 13, 2009

This review is from: Digital Concepts 1 2 4 10 Close-Up Macro Filter Set with Pouch (58mm) (Electronics)
These are a great buy. You can't beat the price for added flexibility. They attach easily and do their job (magnifying the image) really well.

Couple of things to mention- one is that of course, once these are attached to the lens one has to use manual focus. That could be a problem for folks trying to shoot things that move quickly. Additionally, the DOF narrows significantly with the stronger magnifications. This could be a problem if you're shooting insects. Neither of these issues have to do with this manufacturer nor the vendor, but rather limitations of the product itself.

For me though, these diopters work extremely well for my purposes (artistic, abstract photography and flower macros.) I find the functionality to be excellent. My only complaint, and considering what I got for the price, it's a small complaint, is about the packaging. Personally, I would prefer a case with non-scratch surfaces, but the folding, wallet design is a good one... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it, July 28, 2008
This review is from: Digital Concepts 1 2 4 10 Close-Up Macro Filter Set with Pouch (58mm) (Electronics)
I use these to take picture of jewelry for an auction company and in a studio setting and they turn out wonderful. It is a little harder especially with +10 to shoot insects in nature as the DOF is so small you could focus on the grasshopper's body and the legs will be out of focus. Be sure to set a decent aperture.
It takes a lot of time to get a good picture but it is possible. No trouble with the other magnifications. (+1 +2 +4) I generally use the Canon 50mm f1.4 with this lens and it works well. perhaps a lens with a real zoom would work better. Cheap and worth it.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

L1) CANON 100MM F/2.8 MACRO USM EF

Amazon.com Product Description

Bring small things into full-sized view with the Canon EF 100mm macro USM lens. Macro lenses can uncover detail that would be impossible to detect by the eye and give new perspective to extremely minute subjects such as insects or the petals of a small flower, and this lens is no exception. The lens offers such features as a three-group floating system for exceptional close-up performance; a secondary diaphragm that blocks stray light at f/2.8, which increases contrast when shooting wide open; a ultra-sonic monitor (USM) that provides outstanding autofocusing speed at all focusing distances; a wide manual focusing ring with smooth action; and full-time manual focus even in AF mode. The first lens in its class to feature inner focusing, the lens carries a one-year warranty.

  • Focal length: 100mm
  • Maximum aperture: 1:2.8
  • Lens construction: 12 elements in 8 groups
  • Diagonal angle of view: 24 degrees
  • Focus adjustment: Inner focusing system with USM
  • Closest focusing distance: 1 foot (film plane to subject)
  • Filter size: 58mm
  • Dimensions: 3.1 inches in diameter, 4.7 inches long
  • Weight: 21.1 ounces

  • 100mm macro USM lens with f/2.8 maximum aperture for Canon SLR cameras

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent lens for the budding nature photographer, December 15, 2004

This review is from: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (Camera)
Prospective buyers of a macro lens for a Canon EOS system have a great first choice in this 100mm Macro. The extra length over a 50mm macro gives much better working distance (space between lens and subject) in the field, and EOS-compatible lenses by other manufacturers match poorly with accessories and are nowhere near as sharp.

Compared with the earlier Micro Motor 100mm Macro that Canon made (which I also own), the USM lens focuses *very* fast. The USM lens also can accept Tripod Collar B (by use of a small plastic adapter)--I recommend you buy the collar with the lens, as adjusting to a vertical composition with a tripod means repositioning everything. The front element is not recessed in the USM model, which makes lens cleaning easier than with its predecessor. And build quality is improved--the earlier model was prone to its switches breaking (could fix it yourself with the ordered part, but really annoying) and eventually the Micro Motor gearing gave out (no... 5.0 out of 5 stars An extremely versatile lens., January 7, 2005
By
This review is from: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (Camera)
This is the lens I leave on my camera for general purpose use. At non-macro focus distances, it is a very fast lens in a convenient short-telephoto length. The images are sharp out to the corners. This is one of those great Canon lenses that probably deserves an L-series rating but is available without the red stripe and exorbitant cost.

Tested in an astrophotography context (point sources on black backgrounds - excellent for revealing aberration and coma), I have found that this lens is reasonably sharp at f/4 and completely sharp by f/5.6. For daylight terrestrial photography, the tiny aberrations caused by the wide-open f/2.8 aperture are hardy noticeable and by f/4 the images are exquisitely sharp.

There is a lot of glass in this lens - it is heavy. I highly recommend buying the tripod collar as it allows you to attach the camera and lens to a tripod or ballhead with much better balance.

Also, if you plan on using the macro... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp, versatile and a bargain, January 29, 2006

This review is from: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens for Canon SLR Cameras (Camera)
The 100 f/2.8 macro is very sharp, even for general shooting, so it works great for portraits, too. When I'm not using a zoom, this is my walkaround lens for people, relatively tight scenes and even indoor sports. Think of it as a great lens that also shoots macro than the other way around. Hard to beat that versatility at the price.

But it comes into its own at close distances. If you've never had a macro lens, you'll run around shooting everything in sight because everything looks new from a macro perspective.

Canon has several macro lenses. I prefer the 100 mm over shorter lenses because I don't have to get quite as close to that bee or wasp. The 180 mm gives you even more distance from your subject, more background blur and amazing sharpness. But it's much more expensive and in most cases you'll need a tripod, and I shoot a lot of improptu macros as I'm hiking.

For extreme closeups with larger-than-life images, there's the MP-E 65. It goes up... Read more
