Rokinon FE8M-C 8mm F3.5 Fisheye Lens for Canon - Black Reviews

This review is from: Rokinon FE8M-C 8mm F3.5 Fisheye Lens for Canon - Black (Camera) Fisheye lenses are very fun - they give a totally different perspective compared to just about any lens out there. The most common type seem to be the "circle" type, which product a big circle in the center of your image (with the fisheye image inside of that). On digital cameras with a crop-factor (like the Canon Rebel series, XXD series and even 7D), this can sometimes result in what looks like a circle with the top and bottom cut off.. not the most enjoyable image. That's where this one comes in - the Rokinon produced a rectangular fisheye image - there is no "circle" as with other types of fisheye lenses, but you still get that great fisheye look (distortions and all). You might see other similar looking (and priced) Fisheye lenses available out there.. Bower, Pro-Optic, Samyang, Rokinon, Vivitar, Falcon. These are ALL THE SAME LENS - Samyang, the manufacturer, simply re-brands it and changes the colors a bit (For example, look at:... This review is from: Rokinon FE8M-C 8mm F3.5 Fisheye Lens for Canon - Black (Camera) Well what can I tell you, this lens is awesome, I've testes it and let me tell you some of the results I noticed:- The amount of flare (even pointing the lens towards the sun) is minimal, it really surprised me in a very positive way. - It doesn't darkens the corners or produce vignetting effect AT ALL! - The quality in the final pictures is superb, the pictures are crisp sharp even in the edges! - Unlinke the peleng lens, the rokinon does fill the entire frame of the picture with no empty corners. - It does not have the annoying lock ring of the peleng. - When you handle the lens it feels great, the build quality is great and the rubber grip in the focus ring is awesome, its heaviness makes it feel like a solid rock and well built pice of glass; and, unlike the peleng, it does look modern! - The colors look nice and saturated in the final pictures. I loved this one, and I can truely say that this lens will exceed your expectations,... Read more 40 of 41 people found the following review helpful By Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?) This review is from: Rokinon FE8M-C 8mm F3.5 Fisheye Lens for Canon - Black (Camera) If you are reading the review for this lens, you are looking at a highly underrated lens. The performance of this lens has surprised a lot of critics including Ken Rockwell and photozone. If you are out there shooting with fisheye, you definitely should not mind about manual focus and manual aperture. Otherwise, go ahead and spend 3 times as much of your hard earned money on Sigma or at least 4 times as much on the new Canon 8-16mm L which hasn't been shipped yet. BTW the price of this Samyang fisheye has dropped to $263. Hello? How much does the plasticy Canon kit lens cost? For the quality of its optics and build (metal), the Samyang is a real bargain. The first thing I did with this lens was to shoot toward the sun and confirmed that flares were very well controlled. You get a nice single streak of flares and they are not all over the place. Just be realistic with laws of physics, you cannot expect no flare at all with such wide angle even with nano or whatever coating. This... Read more |

If you use a Canon digital SLR and are satisfied with the kit lens (18-55) then buying this lens can be the perfect next step for you. Practically speaking, you will be able to increase your zoom reach to the point where you can A) photograph birds in moderately distant trees, B) be able to zoom in on the other side of a valley and frame something of your interest. Those are just two examples. One thing you will NOT be able to do effectively with this lens, however, is to take sport shots with it. How so? Consider some of the following weakness:*At 300mm zoom range the highest aperture is limited to 5.6 (You will have to use very slow shutter speed to snap fast action shots; remember the inverse relation between aperture and shutter speed.) *The lens size/weight combination makes it hard to hold steady when attached to a camera like the Rebel XT *Slow and often inaccurate auto focus... However, thanks to a local Canon demonstration, I was able to play with several lenses, the 75-300mm f/4-5.6 among them. I got to try it out alongside the IS version (which costs just under 3x as much), the non-USM version, and some of their L-series professional lenses. That said, I found there to be less difference among the directly-comparable lenses (the non-USM, USM, and IS versions) than I'd have thought. On the test shots I took using a Canon Digital Rebel XT, I didn't find full-zoom telephoto shots to be appreciably softer in the non-IS version reviewed herein, nor were the images overly soft for my liking period. The USM focusing didn't seem to make as much of a difference as I'd expected over the non-USM model, either. Focusing was still relatively slow (as other reviewers have pointed out), although once an... This lens is not blazingly fast (f/5.6 at 300mm), and to reliably freeze camera shake, you're going to need a 1/500 sec shutter speed, which means that with ISO 100 film, you only can lose one stop of illumination under "Sunny 16" conditions before you have to decide comprimise somewhere to get your shot.Consequently, shots into the shade, or conducted under the warmer and softer lighting conditions of the morning/evening will inevitably drive you to the comprimise of a high ISO grainy film or the bulk of a tripod to make up for this lens's lack of optical speed. If you always shoot in full noon sunshine, you'll be okay. Even though its a great tool, most people don't like to carry a tripod, so the solution is to either accept grain in enlargements, not take certain photos, spend more money to go to a faster lens, or some combination of the above. Canon EW-73B Lens Hood For 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS EF-S and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lenses
Product Description
Lens hoods are designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens. They do this by extending and shading the end of the lens and since the end of the lens is extended, you also achieve the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
This lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area because of its "petal" shape. This dedicated lens hood is specifically designed to match the exact focal length of the lens it was designed for.
Amazon.com Product Description
The addition of a lens hood can help prevent flares--those circles of light that can accompany images where a strong light source is just outside the fame. These type of lens flares occur when indirect light rays pass through the front lens elements but don't make it all the way through to the image sensor. Canon's EW-73B Lens Hood is designed for the Canon EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM SLR Lens.

Better to break the hood than the front element. - Makes you look more like you know what you are doing and helps to keep others from carelessly walking in front of you. Cons: - Will increase lens movement in windy situations, kind of like a sail on a boat. - Takes up more room in your bag, even when reversed they still add to the diameter of the lens. - People take more notice of you, will help to blow your cover if you are trying to keep a low profile. 17 of 17 people found the following review helpful By Vethod (Bay Area, CA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?) This review is from: Canon EW-73B Lens Hood For 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS EF-S and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lenses (Electronics) I bought this lens hood to go with my 18-135mm kit lens that came with my 60d. at the time of purchase it was less than $20 dollars. the generic brands are usually under $10 dollars but with my past experience with generic lens hoods i wanted to try a canon lens hood. it was basically half of the regular price so i decided to buy it. i liked this lens hood a lot because it fit nice on my lens hood and i didn't have to force anything. it was a perfect fit and slipped on easily. i also liked that when you are not using it you can flip it inwards some generic lens hoods do not have this feature so i believe that this alone was worth the extra price. 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful By This review is from: Canon EW-73B Lens Hood For 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS EF-S and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lenses (Electronics) Well, It is just a piece of plastic, right? Not exactly! I bought the third party one from Precision Design which has nothing to do with precision. In fact, it does not fit well on the lens and never locks, I mean, it should lock on the lens when you turn it to the side. Canon charges a lot for its original hood and I definitely think that it should be supplied with the lens! Acting like this, Canon is just playing too much tight. However, I confess that the Canon original lens hood for the 17-85mm lens is of far highest quality than the one from Precision design that I bought. I regret to have bought this third party hood. The Canon one fits perfectly on the lens and has a nice velvet coat inside that I think is intended to protect the lens against scratches. My advice? Well, Pay more and get the one from Canon. It worths! |
